Modern European Philosophy (MA)
The master's programme in Modern European Philosophy at Leiden University focuses on continental philosophy ranging from German Idealism and Phenomenology via Deconstruction and Poststructuralism through 21st century developments in the field. It explores different approaches to thinking in a critical and creative manner.

The MA Modern European Philosophy also encourages and practices openness towards all other approaches taught at the Institute, such as analytic philosophy, practical philosophy, and global and comparative philosophy. In this open methodological framework, which includes both systematic and historical perspectives, it fosters philosophical reflection on ontology, human existence, art and culture, as well as contemporary world.

The Leiden University Institute for Philosophy is one of two institutes of philosophy in the Netherlands with a research group in Continental Philosophy. Its staff is a friendly and collegial group of internationally acclaimed researchers, who combine expertise in all areas of continental philosophy ranging from German Idealism, Nietzsche and psychoanalysis, phenomenology, critical philosophy, and deconstruction, through 21th century developments. You will learn alongside talented and highly motivated students, under specialists in the field, in small scale seminars. If you wish to deepen your understanding, you are always welcome to participate in the activities of the thriving PhD community, as well as in the research seminars and events organised by the Leiden Centre for Continental Philosophy (LCCP).

What are your career prospects?
Our graduates are currently employed in a wide range of professions in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Successful completion of an MA also prepares you for PhD research and a career in academia. Currently 100% of our students find employment at university-graduate level within one year of completing our one-year MA in Philosophy. We can attribute this both to the high quality of the programme and the talent and ambition of our students.

Is Modern European Philosophy the programme for you?
The specialization Modern European Philosophy teaches you to investigate human existence and the world in which it takes place philosophically. Whether you are interested in the practical, cultural and political dimensions of life, or in the philosophical foundations of being and existence, you will find a stimulating environment for your studies. You will be invited to use your philosophical skills to analyse and critically interpret the contemporary world. This program is for you both if you are interested in questions of human existence and coexistence, meaning, technics and art, and if you are interested in the fundamental philosophical questions of language, being, and thinking.
